Do I have to wash new bedding first?

What could be nicer than brand new bedding? Delicious, fresh crispy duvet covers that have just come out of the packaging and that you can sleep under for the very first time. Do you use these duvets immediately or do you have to wash new bedding first? And if so, how should you wash your duvet cover for the first time? At how many degrees can you wash new bedding? Can it be put in the dryer or not? And how do you ensure that the quality remains as good as possible so that you can enjoy it optimally? We explain how to wash your new bedding for the first time in a safe way so that it stays beautiful for a long time!

Why do I have to wash my new bedding first?

Well, of course you don't have to do anything, as far as we're concerned you dive right in if you really can't resist. But we do recommend that you wash the new bedding first, because brand new bedding absorbs almost no moisture. When you wash your new bedding first, you activate its ability to absorb more moisture (as with brand new towels).

Our 7 tips for washing new bedding:

There are a few things to keep in mind when washing your new duvet cover for the first time. So here are our 7 tips.

Do not wash too hot

Do not wash your new bedding too hot: we recommend washing it at a maximum of 30 degrees when you do this for the very first time. When you wash it afterwards, it is best to look at the washing instructions. Different materials such as satin, cotton percale or linen, react differently to temperatures.

Short program with few revs

Especially when you wash new bedding for the first time, it is best to wash it on a short program with not too many turns. In this way, the quality and color are better preserved. We recommend this anyway, even if you have washed it before.

Wash inside out

Be sure to wash new bedding inside out. Then the color is better preserved. To protect it even more, you can put the cover in one of the pillowcases as a kind of 'laundry net'. Button your duvet cover so that there is no tension on the stitching at the opening.

Liquid detergent versus  powder

Liquid detergent may spread better on the bedding, but washing powder is cheaper and better for the environment. Liquid detergent contains a lot of water.

Do not use fabric softener but a dash of vinegar

As tempting as it is to add fabric softener, it is better to omit it because fabric softener reduces the moisture-absorbing capacity. And with linen, even the fiber can weaken. What you can do is add a dash of vinegar. This ensures that the colors are better preserved. Because vinegar removes the limescale from water, your laundry becomes softer. Have you got a taste for it? Then take a look at the 10 ingenious tips to use vinegar for your laundry from Suus makes cleaning.

Do not wash it with other laundry

New bedding can give off, so it's important to wash it separately from other laundry. Your partner won't be happy if his/her snow-white t-shirts are colored light pink because you threw in your red bedding. In addition, it is better not to "too full" the drum so that the bedding has room.

Hang it out to dry

It's best to hang out your bedding to dry, especially if you're washing it for the first time. Then you don't run the risk that it shrinks and you get fewer folds and creases. If you do want to dry it in the dryer, then inside out on a low temperature and not bone dry. Oh yes, and don't wait too long with hanging out or drying, then you will get the freshest result.

How often should I normally wash bedding?

It is best to change your bed once a week. Once every two weeks is also possible, but we do not recommend using your bedding for longer without washing it. When you sleep you can sometimes lose 0.3 to 2 liters of fluid per night, so check how much that is after a week. Furthermore, bacteria and dust mites also accumulate and we haven't even mentioned the dead skin cells you leave behind in your bed. Just think about that, if you're too lazy to change your bed on time. A bed that is changed regularly is simply a lot more hygienic and sleeps a lot better!
