Every month we visit a creative, colorful and inspiring person. She or he is the 'bedMATE of the month'.
The bedMATE is the most iconic item in our collection. The extra long pillow serves as a headboard, but also as a cuddle buddy, a friend who gives support.
We crawl into bed with the 'bedMATE of the month'. We take a look at their home and in their colorful (bed) rooms. In conversation we discover how they experience the SUITE life. What's going on in their heads? Where do they get their inspiration from? And in what color do they dream?
This month, all-round creative Nicole Huisman visited fashion stylist and artist - and good friend - Thomas Vermeer , in his apartment packed with color, art and design in the heart of Amsterdam.
'Look, this is nice, if I fold it in half it's Vermeer's V!' And a few minutes later the bedMATE had a scarf on and a cap on and cleaning wipes were made into 'ankles' by stuffing socks with them. I've shown bedMATES different corners of the room several times for this series, dragging them from beds to sofas and moving them from the bedroom to the living room, sometimes even to a kitchen. But never before has anyone made a letter out of it, let alone given 'him' a new look.
I am at home with Thomas Vermeer: fashion stylist, artist - half of artist duo Rottenveel Vermeer. - and above all good friend. Thomas and I met at ELLE magazine, where we both worked in the fashion department. Where I first assisted Thomas and learned a lot from him, I later stood next to him and we made the most enjoyable and most inspired trips to the international fashion weeks. His eye is unique. He has the most creative and funniest associations, without being bland. He brings surprising elements together and thus always creates something unexpectedly new.
Thomas is color. Always styled down to the last detail, even if he hasn't done his best. Effortlessly and intuitively he combines colors with each other, the whole is harmonious without feeling too 'done'. His names give colors more depth ('biscuit', for example, is what I use since he once described a beige / yellow shade, brilliant right?). I've never caught him on black and he continues this love for color in his work as well. People he dresses, for example in fashion series for ELLE and Harper's Bazaar, or portraits for LINDA., often dare to step out of their comfort zone thanks to his inspiring approach. Color is energy and Thomas is a living example of this.
And his house is just like that. His cobalt blue HAY sofa combines fresh with his soft yellow Vitra dining room chairs, surprisingly next to the juicy orange Rira bowl. The light pink details are subtle: in boxes, in the pink Sabine Marcelis for Hem pouf, in his slippers, in the plastic Kartell stool. Thomas finds freshness and tranquility important in the bedroom, but in a distinctly colorful way that suits his personality. 'That's why I went for fresh color accents like ' jade ' and ' cobalt ' in combination with quiet tones like ' peach ' and ' cedar wood '. The bigDOT in green reminds me of big fresh Mentos, which I really like!'
A tip for those who want color, but don't dare yet? 'If you are not strong in combining colours, you can simply go for one statement colour, or take inspiration from a colored artwork or poster in your home, so that a color connection is created.' Tip from us: get enough color inspiration on Instagram via @rotteveelvermeer, or on Thomas's own account, @thomas_vermeer .
